The first major reno/update on our “Waterfront Dream” is underway! Since the stairs are the very first thing you see when you walk in the
front main entrance door, I decided that was the best place to start. (life on the canal ~ the side of the house that faces the canal is the front…the street side is the back. I still call it the other way around)
The carpet on the stairs had seen better days! The previous owner had a little dog that evidently had a habit of peeing on the top step. Let’s just say it was naaa-sty! And carpet on main entrance stairs is never a good idea in my book. Therefore, I ripped it out!
This picture doesn’t do the yucky-ness of the carpet justice! You’ll just have to take my word for it. It. Was. Gross! Even with the corn plant and pelican cheering it on! 🙂
It took me about an hour to remove all the carpet; and then both Mr. and I spent another hour just removing tack strips and hundreds of nails! Whoever installed this carpet wanted to make sure it wasn’t going anywhere.
A few hours later…BIG improvement. Even if it was just bare wood at this point!
Due to “Little Dukie” peeing on the carpet, we were unable to save the wood under it and also had to replace it. Starting at the top of the staircase, Mr. removed all the risers and treads.
We bought 2×12 boards for the treads and 1×6 primed trim boards for the risers. We used a grey stain on the treads; I love how it has that rustic, deck look about it. We let the stain dry over night and installed everything the next day.
And this is what we ended up with!
We still have to trim out the sides, and I’m still trying to decide if I want to leave the risers white or do something fun to them.
Here’s a side-by-side shot. Such an improvement!!
Next on the list…painting the walls!
Y’all have a great day!
